WHY FITRAH?

The goodness & potential within

Fitrah is an Arabic word that refers to the innate nature within every person—the original disposition we are born with and an inclination toward what is good. At Fitrah, that idea shapes how we see young people.

We believe there is goodness, ability, and potential within every young person, regardless of the circumstances they have experienced or the challenges they have faced. Our role isn’t to define who they should become or to create their potential. It’s to help them discover what’s already within them—through opportunity, guidance, meaningful relationships, real-world experience, and people willing to open doors.

The goodness and potential are already there. Opportunity helps bring them forward.

The Fitrah Model

Opportunity becomes a pathway

Young people need more than a single class, job, or training experience. Fitrah creates opportunities for them to explore what interests them, develop practical skills, gain real-world experience, grow with support, and connect to what comes next.

Transportation Lab

Explore careers by doing.

Fitrah’s Transportation Lab gives young people hands-on exposure to careers in transportation and the skilled trades. Through guided learning in vehicle systems, electrical fundamentals, diagnostics, preventative care and emerging technologies, youth build practical skills while discovering where their interests and abilities might lead.

For some young people, it’s their first opportunity to discover that a skilled career could be for them.

REAL EXPERIENCE. REAL SUPPORT.

Skills matter. So does having someone in your corner.

Young people build confidence through real responsibility, paid work experience, mentorship and consistent support. Fitrah works alongside youth as they develop workplace habits, navigate challenges and take steps toward greater independence.

We don’t just prepare young people for work. We stay beside them as they learn how to move forward.

A Youth Story

The Impact of Someone Believing in You

MEET STALLION

They came for a job. They discovered something more.

When Stallion first came to Fitrah, they barely made eye contact and often spoke only a few words. As a former foster youth, Stallion didn’t necessarily arrive knowing everything they were capable of. They have said that, at first, they showed up for one simple reason: they were getting a job and earning money.

But over time, something began to change.

Stallion realized Fitrah was more than a job. Through work, mentorship, responsibility, and being part of a community that believed in them, they began discovering things about themselves—their abilities, their confidence, and possibilities for their future that they hadn’t seen before.

At one time, college didn’t feel like something Stallion believed they could do. As their confidence grew, so did their understanding of what might be possible.

Stallion went on to become an AmeriCorps trainee and eventually a trusted leader at Fitrah—a lead trainer and key holder, helping guide other young people.

The goodness and potential were already there. Opportunity helped bring them forward.

“I came for a job. I realized Fitrah was more than a job.”

LANTERN SEVEN

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Learning business by doing business.

Lantern Seven is Fitrah’s social enterprise—a real-world learning environment where young people can gain experience in sales, e-commerce, merchandising, customer service, marketing, and day-to-day business operations.

Youth aren’t simply learning about business. They have opportunities to participate in the work of running one—building workplace skills, taking on responsibility, solving problems, and seeing firsthand what it takes to turn an idea into income.

Along the way, Lantern Seven introduces young people to another possible path:

Entrepreneurship.

For some youth, the next opportunity may be a job or apprenticeship. For others, it may eventually mean creating something of their own.

Good Finds. Good Purpose.

Purchases through Lantern Seven also help generate revenue that supports Fitrah’s work with young people—creating a social enterprise where business and purpose work together.

Readiness

Youth may begin with zero experience, but they leave with practical skills, professional habits, and a renewed sense of direction and purpose.

Purposeful Work

Young people work in one of two areas—our social enterprise or our automotive shop—where they take on meaningful roles, learn new skills, and build the confidence to succeed in any future career.

Work on Themselves

Youth participate in intensive case management as they set and achieve goals for their education, career, and life. Our curriculum helps them achieve milestones on their self-directed career pathway.

"Fitrah provided me with valuable skills to build my resume, but the key was that I had to be ready to put in the work. That’s how it works here—you're paid for your effort, training, and personal growth. Fitrah offers a strong support system with endless resources, but it’s up to you to make the most of it. The program is all about learning from your mistakes and showing up for yourself. I’ve never encountered a place that gets that as well as Fitrah does."
